The North East coast in winter was one of Richard’s favourite places. The area between Blyth and Seaton Sluice had a particular fascination for him. The bleak landscape along the coast, being a mix of rural and semi industrial decline, was very austere; however, in this Richard saw beauty. He painted directly on the spot, from direct observation, using fluid colour to express the feeling of damp space. The otherwise watery environment is punctuated by geometric shapes of tank-traps and pipes. This bleakness is contrasted with the colourful Cullercoats beach scenes, showing people enjoying themselves at the seaside.

Richard’s industrial and shipping scenes have been very sought after: with two paintings currently hanging in the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Tyne Dock Engineering was the subject of much of his work for many years. The yards closed; the River Tyne underwent a period of change, with much of the traditional heavy industries of shipbuilding and ship repair in decline. Richard’s response to this was that change can be both enabling and threatening to individuals. There is an undoubted sense of loss with their passing, however, the exciting regeneration of the Tyne is part of the river’s continuing rites of passage through and into the 21st Century.

Richard's work shows how absorbed he was in the rural and industrial landscape of the North East. He loved the bleak and austere northern landscape of moor, coastline, river and industry. Works include the navigational obelisks off the Island of Lindisfarne, these having an intimidating presence within their remoteness of eel grass and mud flats; similar to the moorland lead mine chimneys.
