Richard Hobson 1945-2004

Richard was a renowned and respected artist based in the North East of England.  The North East area provided much of the inspiration for Richard’s work.  Richard was a painter who vividly captured the essence of the North Eastern scene.  For over 30 years his paintings and monoprints evoked the Northumbrian and Durham uplands and the changing industrial scene of Tyneside with great authority.  He often worked in difficult conditions to capture the changing mood of the landscape. He described lowering skies, brief sunlight, rain-washed moor and the bleak, but dramatic, coastal and river scene.

Richard had many solo and group exhibitions both regionally and nationally during his career as a fine artist and won many awards and commissions for his work.

Richard was also the Conservator of Paintings at the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, Durham.

…characterised by tremendous energy… …like most of the best artists, he found interest and beauty where many of us wouldn’t think of looking…
