Coastal Scenes

The North East coast in winter was one of Richard’s favourite places. The area between Blyth and Seaton Sluice had a particular fascination for him. The bleak landscape along the coast, being a mix of rural and semi industrial decline, was very austere; however, in this Richard saw beauty. He painted directly on the spot, from direct observation, using fluid colour to express the feeling of damp space. The otherwise watery environment is punctuated by geometric shapes of tank-traps and pipes.
This bleakness is contrasted with the colourful Cullercoats beach scenes, showing people enjoying themselves at the seaside.
