Richard’s paintings (consisting primarily of monotypes*, watercolours and pen and ink drawings) capture the changing industrial landscape of the North of England and through their documentation of the history of the region, show how the region and our lives within it have been shaped by these influences; from the dry docks, fishing trawlers, coal and lead mines, power stations,  Dunston Staithes, sheep auctions, markets and coasts to the Town Moor Fair.

*A monotype is simply a single image made from either oil paint or printers ink, drawn upon a copper or glass plate sheet. It can be offset, i.e.  printed on to paper, either by hand burnishing as in the case of these monotypes or by running through an etching press. These monotypes are completed in one session; therefore, they demand and dictate that a visual shorthand is created. This visual language imparts its own unique quality of texture and mark making.
